It’s the last working day of the year for the Mock Trials team and so we take a moment to  look back on the key events in the Mock Trials calendar this past year.

Spring term

In March, 318 school teams took part in 53 local heats across the country as part of the Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial (MCMT) Competition. The term ended with a Mock Trials road (train!) trip up to Edinburgh for the Bar Mock Trial (BMT) National Final, with Lord Justice Leveson and ITV’s ‘Judge Rinder’ in attendance. Wirral Girls’ Grammar School emerged victors after a tightly fought grand final against The Steiner Academy, Hereford.

Summer term

The MCMT local heat winners took part in regional heats in May with the winners proceeding to the national final at the Victoria Law Courts in Birmingham at the beginning of June. A very shocked and excited Fairlands Middle School from Somerset discovered they had won the competition.

‘It [The MCMT] remains the highlight of my school year and it such a fantastic opportunity for the pupils. The really is nothing else like it out there!’ (Kate Persaud, Fairlands Middle School)

On a hot sunny day in July, we hosted a very special event at the British Library alongside the Magna Carta 800 exhibition about the importance of learning about the law and understanding its wider context for society. Students learnt advocacy skills and took part in an interactive Magna Carta workshop. In the afternoon, some of these students showcased their newly learnt skills whilst members of the legal profession took part in a lively panel discussion including the Solicitor General and the Chairman of the Bar Council.

Autumn Term

In September, we kicked off the 22nd cycle of the MCMT competition. If you’re really keen to get involved we still have very limited places available in a few heats, please contact Constance on 020 7566 4142

In November, we ran our largest ever BMT competition, increasing the number of heats run by a third, from 18 last year to 24 this cycle. To find out what people thought check out our curated tweets from all the heats on Storify
